Nurglets photostream dump
meepging up the forum meepe box with another thread, could have added this lot to a previous load, but after a revisiting and reshooting with my new lens and flash, I felt there's enough for a seperate dump.
more shots of abandoned old mining buildings and mill works.

pump house and sink, not sure why they bothered running a pipe here, as there's a river 20 feet before this that's already being used for drainage and runoff water.

combined mill, settling and firing building. there's a small 20ft wheel hidden in the vegetation.

inside first building, the water wheel powered the horizontal shaft, which in turn powered the vertical shaft which was attached to a multi-tonne granite millstone used for crushing quarried stone to extract the clay

same shafts and showing the centre part of the wheel

me meeping about with wideangles

pressing run

the wheel in the second mill building, not a whole lot left, but it's meeping huge.

upper floor interior and exterior of second mill

Inside and under the mill, and the centre part of its wheel. You don't get a real sense of being safe in there, but these buildings have been for at least a hundred years, and will probably last longer than I do.

cliche long exposure waterfall shots

exterior of fourth mill. wheel has gone completely in this one. I have a feeling it was salvaged/cannibalized by the owners of the farm that's just behind it years ago for the scrap metal value.

empty wheel pit

upper floor showing where 2 millstones used to sit inside the large circular things. There would have been four in total, 2 either side of the wheel.
thats it really, was a nice 2 hour hike through the woods that left me exhausted and filthy. what was nice was when I was nearly back to the start of the trail, came across hundreds of tiny frogs that were making the trek from the pool in the first pic to the river just across the path. I'd be lying if i said i didnt help a few of the smaller runt ones make it...

went to another castle today at Beynac. It's the opposing castle to the one at castlenaud that i previously posted and was manned by the british. it's smaller but more robust and less fancy compared to the french one.
in the exterior shots, if you notice black specs, it's some of the thousands of small birds (sparrows?) that were flocking around and clinging to the castle walls

I decided to take out the father inlaw's mountain bike yesterday afternoon for a ride for the first time personally in years. it seemed a great idea, iit was bright sunshine, and when out in the car everything seemed pretty flat as we're near the dordogne river. I found out later that I'd cycled 32k, and that actually the local landscape isn't flat at all according to my sore muscles and meep. took a few photos too.

about 30 if i counted right, point kind of taken, maybe i'll limit pics per post, but content heavy threads are good, no? is there an option to reverse the thread direction like in the camphone thread, or is that an admin only thing?
anyway, we've had some pretty heavy storms rolling in from the pyrenees so clouds have been big.
this is the "lantern de mort", a huge monument type building that no one really knows what its for, with no records or depictions.

So i'm currently on a 2 week vacation in the south of france staying at the in-laws. local scenery is fairly impressive, lots of cliffs formed from volcanic activity, forests, wide rivers. lots of chateau's and castles left over from the hundred years war. also lots of prehistoric human sites.
the weather is good, really clear skies, being miles from any major population is good for looking at the stars

roque la gageac, a village built into the bottom of some cliffs that have some neolithic caves half way up them as well

half way up the cliff checking out the caves

bastide de domme, old fortified town, was also the place where the knights templar were kept locked up awaiting their trial after being screwed over by the french king. there's some old templar graffiti but didnt bother paying to see it, wouldnt have been able to take photos of it anyway.

town gate
ye olde toilet and church

the castle at castelnaud, pretty big thing, lots of old war machinery, catapaults, trebuchets etc..

some wicked looking guns and stuff

the view

huge cannon
big lizard back at the house.
more to come as holiday progresses

last few from the hike up to the mining pit, and a few from trip to plymouth, where all you american pig-dogs ancestors left from.
gorse bush, the bane of my meeping life when out walking, sharp and tough as meep, can seriously hurt and maim if you fall on it.
this meepy meeper sat watching me long enough to change lenses and settings and get closer to take a few shots. if i'd had a rifle it would have been food.
couple of stiched panoramic shots and thats the last hike shots.

thats pretty much it. got an air show to go to next week, so should get some nice shots of some helicopters and fighter planes new and old to show off. (although weather forecast is meeping dismal)

went back to the abandoned house but it had been burned out, so hiked up to the top of the mining tips. its late so only the first few are done being processed. went out too late so by the time i got there sun had pretty much set, but the light was kind of good for all of 10 minutes.
more to come later. it's late and I'm up early for a trip to the national aquarium, so more landscape stuff to come, and then, FISH

cheers. sometimes I use a graduated neutral density filter to balance out sky and foreground exposure values, but recently been playing with layering differently exposed shots and balancing the correctly exposed bits by erasing under/over exposed bits. using filters is easier, or actually using an hdr program to do it automatically which i do now and again, but its hard to get a decent result without it looking like an overcooked piece of meep with them.

just got back from finding out i'll be making about 200 for an hours work with my camera from last week, and after getting a couple of shots published gratis in a photography mag last month for some self promotion, it seems I'll be going into business now with more work coming up this weekend, and some at the end of the month. if anyone has a camera you should seriously think about trying to make some money with it, lucrative is one word to describe it.
anyway, last lot of the abandoned farm, pretty much just exterior stuff.
thats it, thanks for compliments, especially you dent (_*_)

ok, so here's the rest of the abandoned farm and house. the house itself had been boarded up after an eviction of some homeless squatters, but someone had already got a window clear so I didnt have to use too much effort getting in. The house was officially vacated by some wierd old farmer called huggy bear who had an american wife and an english girlfriend. The clay mining company wanted to expand their waste tipping and the farm borders on the edge of their site, so they paid the guy an absolute fortune to move.
I forgot my torch, so I didnt go upstairs as it was pitch black and I pooped my pants a little. the wind kept making funny noises and i didnt want to get raped. I'll be going back again soon with a torch and a full size crowbar for more pics.
last few to come later.

I went exploring and found an abandoned old farm with some boarded up freaky buildings, just as well I took my mini crowbar (thought a little staged "self portrait" might be interesting..)
This would be an old slaughter pit...
Its late, and I have a load of shots to go through and edit, so I'll post the rest in the morning, so this is just a little teaser.

nurgs covered it but i figured i would add something, just fyi. for motion/waterfall shots, you can use a neutral density filter (or circular polarizer). they darken the scene by a few stops (or more depending on application), allowing you to keep the shutter open longer and not blow out the pic.
I use a circular polarizer all the time, mostly because i shoot cars and the polarizer gets rid of the reflections on glass/paint. it also allows me to shoot motion/rolling shots in bright sunlight because of it's darkening properties.

I'm probably going to sound really condescending but to explain it in simple terms..
Here's the exif data from the file detailing all the camera settings for the shot:
Exposure Time = 2 second
Lens F-Number/F-Stop = F13
ISO Speed Ratings = 400
Original Date/Time = 2009:06:28 18:12:14
Shutter Speed Value (APEX) = -65535/65536
Aperture Value (APEX) Aperture = F13
Flash = Flash did not fire, compulsory flash mode
Focal Length = 10 mm
So basically, to get the 2 second exposure time, I've stopped the aperture down to F13 from normally shooting around F5.6-F8. The larger the aperture number, the smaller the aperture hole and less light hitting the back of the camera requiring the shutter to be open longer to get the required light to create a properly exposed image.
The same does apply at night, but instead of artificially cutting the light entering the camera by stopping the aperture down, there's already naturally low light levels, so to get the same 2 second exposure you'd need an aperture of 1.8 or something nice and wide open, or by bumping the iso speed up to 1600 or higher, or if you kept the F stop at 13, the exposure time would have to be increased to something like 30 seconds or longer.
was that any help/clear enough?

Question for you -
A: On the "cliche" waterfall shots - what shutter speed and aperture settings did you use? When you drop the shutter speed down to really low levels (I'm assuming around 1/25?) what do you do with your aperture to compensate for the explosion of light entering the shutter? Is there a rule of thumb, or is this just a guessing game?
B: Suppose you want to grab that same shot but in the middle of the night - do the same rules apply, just on the slower end of the settings spectrum?
