quarry and star shoot

I've been out again with my camera, this time to one of the many open pit mining operations near to my house. plan on doing some more along these lines but have to dodge the security vans, sheer drops from crumbling ledges and blasting in the active quarries. something to pass the time I guess.

and i've also been meeping around with a free piece of software called StarTrails which is kind of neat. something to pass the time on a nice clear night with a bottle 'o' beer out back. instead of taking one long shot and getting a ton of light pollution from any nearby housing, it uses 100 or more smaller shots and merges them.

Nice pics. I didn't realize y'all ravaged your meager landscape to such a degree. I mean there's A LOT of Michigan to meep up for mineral goodies.

Where the meep is Cornwall from your locale? Just saw a thing on Discovery about a geodesic dome thing built on a played out strip mine. The translation to a similar dome over Houston was kinda ridiculous.

Rock on, photomaster!

I actually live in the dead center of cornwall, surrounded by the mess of mining and waste tips, it doesn't actually look too bad, makes an otherwise boring, flat landscape interesting. what google maps cant show that well is the elevation of the tips compared with the natural landscape. the dome/eden project is about a 15 minute drive from me, but i've never been, i've heard its impressive though.

dagwood: I mean there's A LOT of Michigan to meep up for mineral goodies.

I think you have your geography a bit monkeyed off. There is very very little open mining in Michigan. Salt is the number one mineral mined here and it's gathered through water extraction, which doesn't change the landscape.

Copper, coal and iron have also been mined here (in the U.P.) in the past but most mine activity in Michigan is no defunct other than salt.

Also, nurglets is in England, not Michigan.

me-Where the meep is Cornwall from your locale?

You missed my point I reckon Wotak. Please continue to drink and surf, just dona post.

Is the <({U.P.})> not actually part of MI?

From Wikianswers- Great Britain is the larger of the two British Isles, and the 9th largest globally. It has a land area of 80,823 square miles. the closest state as far as land area is Kansas, with a land area of 81,815 square miles.

Bigger than I thought.

Nurglets, please tell more about security challenges.

dagwood: Nurglets, please tell more about security challenges.

nothing too exciting, the limit of site security round here is a sign, and maybe a couple of granite blocks across the entrance to stop people dumping cars. there's the odd roaming landrover patrol complete with grumpy fist-shaking old-timer, but apart from getting escorted off site and maybe a caution from the police there's nothing a quick dive into a hedge won't sort, which isnt too fun, most hedge's in our county consist of a nasty plant called gorse, 2 inch spikes instead of leaves are not comfortable.

the company who owns the quarries generally relies on the public's common sense to stay out of places that have regular blasting, sheer cliff drops from loose pathways, sediment pools that would suck you down faster than a thai-lady boy and the huge speeding 100 tonne trucks that the driver cant see whats immediately in front of them.

Perhaps you can uncombobulate your cryptic ''point'' and explain what the meep Michigan has to do with England?

dagwood: s the <({U.P.})> not actually part of MI?

It is, Captain meep.

Again, please feel free to enlighten wotak as to this elusive ''point''.

Bait taken, thanks Cap'n Wotsack. Only that Mitchigan and it's ganders are to be used and abused. Also we have an excess of land to exploit and they don't. I really thought the copper mining had devastated large tracts of your homeland. It's all about you buddy

How much different do I have to put it to speak your language? It really is all about you, you really are the only reason that MI came to mind at that moment. Ain't you special?

Ok, I think I get it. So this:

dagwood: Nice pics. I didn't realize y'all ravaged your meager landscape to such a degree. I mean there's A LOT of Michigan to meep up for mineral goodies.

Could have been written as:

dagwood: Nice spaceship. I didn't realize y'all had such a huge moon orbiting Uranus. I mean I once had a pair of blue socks but I lost one in El Segundo so now I just have a blue puppet. Also, WOTAK.

...and would have made just as much sense.

Thanks, I can't believe I didn't see where you were going with that.

more olde worlde ruined clayworks, there's a trail that runs through a river valley thats full of hidden, abandoned buildings including several mills complete with huge, decaying water wheels and pits, which I need to revisit once my new wide angle lens gets delivered on monday.

drying pan, big wet slabs of clay were laid in the ruts, then big blocks of granite put on top to press the water out of them

Its about 20 feet wide and 100ft long

overgrown ruins

one of the 3 or 4 mills along the length of the valley, can get pretty blair witch as it gets darker, and the tunnels inside are pitch black and go back into the hillside

one of 2 remaining wheels with water chute, one of the biggest made of its type, has about a 30 deep foot pit with some nice pointy, rusted ironwork lying in wait at the bottom for someone just to get a little too close to the edge.

half filled in corridor/tunnel, half way along is the 30ft wheel pit

will be taking a return trip next week with better gear and more of a plan to take better shots of abandoned meep hopefully.
