windows 7
thought i'd start a forum thread that can easily be tracked rather than comments that will fade out.
windows 7, your thoughts so far?
gothmog:
Been running it for a few days. It's a faster Vista. I will probably stick with it since it already seems as if not more stable than Vista 64.
gethoht:
hrmm... most of my music production applications don't run on it yet.... I'll be sticking with xp on my music workstation and ubuntu for all else.
kthxbye
meepninja:
So far it's rock solid and fast as meep, though the raid 0 setup I've got going is probably helping. Haven't had any compatibility issues worth speaking of - running stuff in XP or Vista mode works fine.
Unless it starts choking on something I need, I'll be using it as my main OS for the foreseeable future. I am keeping my HD with XP on it for a while though just to be safe.
i installed it this weekend, looks nice, has a cleaner feel and look to it, switching between apps is smooth. i like the way you can choose which tab to switch to in ie on the taskbar when coming from a different app by hovering over the taskbar icon, not sure about all the ie 8 feed and webslice customization things yet.
i never had any problems with vista to be honest, i waited for service pack 1 to come out, so i never had bother with the first few problems and the install i have automatically turns off all the apparently annoying uac retard protection stuff.
one thing i want to know, is this a new os, or just vista, taken apart and redesigned and meeped with more than what just regular microsoft updates can accomplish?
I made a seperate partition just incase specifically incase it goes meep up anyway.

I installed Windows 7 RC on a spare box and got a daily BSOD with a driver fault. Performance was slower than the XP install it replaced.
AMD XP2600+ processor slightly overclocked 1.5 gig of ram ATI X1050 graphics Card
So than I Installed it on a dual cpu server and changed the graphics card. No problems with this install and the performance is on par with XP. I really like the mouseover preview on the taskbar. The only problem is my old scanner and printer are not compatible. Gonna try out XP mode to see if my old hardware will work.
Dual 2.8 Mhz Xeon processors 2 gigs of ram NVIDIA GeForce 6200 graphics card
You can't upgrade from XP to 7. So just for kicks I upgraded from XP to Vista to 7 and it worked fine.

i've never found the windows scoring method to be entirely accurate, somethings would run painfully slow on my system, yet the same app would run fine on someone elses with lower scores across the board.
i'm liking the revised start menu and pop-out options for programs, like last files opened/saved for specific programs instead of one messy list, and the task bar looks a whole lot better with just icons, kind of like the apple dock but without farty zooming and bouncing going on. havent used vista for a few days now and had no issues with any gfx/photo editing apps.

So far everything continues to be rock solid. Ran into a weird issue with tversity and 7 shutting off transfers to my xbox360, but I was able to fix that pretty quick. I also had an issue with my storage drives not showing up in My Computer, and disk management couldn't attach them either. Turned out to be some stupid read only issue that I had to fix via command line in diskpart.

Been using Win7 x64 for about a week now. Things are working really well. Had some initial trouble with Dual booting XP, but sorted it all out. I have a nVidia 8800GTS and need to disable vertical sync to get any games to play properly.
Ventrilo x64 wont install, but 32bit version installs fine. Was working until yesterday, now the mic records blaring tones instead of my voice. Using Kaspersky Beta 8.0.0.1081, its fast and painless so far. uTorrent has been up and running, no issues. Google Chrome needs some shortcut modification to get it to run properly. No go for my Kodak ESP7 printer or Eyetoy camera.
I've despised Vista since I tried it in beta, its slow, annoying and problematic. So far Win7 is fast, enjoyable and problematic on a much smaller scale. Could be a winner.

its free, until at least next year, quick and easy to install, hasnt crashed or had any application errors yet, the interface is like vista, but more minimal rather than catering specifically to new pc users and being obvious. it still has the uac and all the other twaddle thats supposed to protect idiots from the open world, but it seems alot easier to turn off and stop bothering you than it did in vista.
here's a quick dumb shot of the interface
also, its free and you get official updates from microsoft, and several companies have already brought whql drivers for windows 7, so doesnt look like there will be that whole problem vista had for a while where no one could get drivers for their hardware.
and its free

Now 7 has been 'officially' released and people have been using it for awhile now, does anyone have any more thoughts on it?
I've just re-installed it, I blindly followed some optimization tips that involved registry editing and removing some services, and all it did was introduce a random system stutter/delay which was extremely irritating and meeped up my network access to other devices on it. So i've gone from the first evaluation release to the full ultimate version and i'm back to enjoying it again. Seems cleaner and more smooth, and 0 problems, after finding out that the constant disk activity was because the os drive was 98% full because the new install had archived all the old install's system and program files on the same drive.

I'll buy it from newegg when the price drops. I'm pretty happy with Vista so I'm not in a hurry. Once it hits $100 I'll pick up a copy.
The only version of windows since 3.1 that I haven't purchased (or acquired) was Windows ME. I waited for a year after XP's release to jump on the XP bandwagon because at the time I had all of my audio apps kicking meep on a stripped down 98Lite box - but other than that I've always been one to adapt right after the first big price drop.
I have absolutely no problems with jumping into 7 as soon as the price levels off because I'm fine with Vista for as long as that takes.

I've been running Vista Ultimate, copies of which I got for $5 each through school. I started using it after SP1 was released and liked it a lot. Found it much more stable than everyone claimed and never had any problems. Definitely an improvement over XP.
I tried a Windows 7 test release a year or so again and did NOT like how it ran compared ro Vista. Now that it's out officially, should I give it another try? Anyone wanna convince me one way or another?
With my legit student editions (3 total) of Vista Ultimate how much will it cost me to upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate or whatever the comporable edition is called?

I've had 3 users upgrade from Vista to Win7 and all three completely hosed their systems with different issues on each. The upgrade process is by no means well implemented. You'll definitely want to backup your data and do a clean install.
So far I've been running Win7 for about a year now and did a clean install when my last drive crashed a few months ago. Everything has been working great, all the issues I had with the beta have been resolved. The only thing that bugs me is the file permissions issues with "protected" areas and junction link craziness. But these are all Vista issues too so its probably just my lack of adjustment from XP.

I ran the upgrade and haven't had any significant problems, I was too lazy to backup anything. After freezing on the first reboot and then download/installing 5923452304230MB of updates it seems to run fine.
This is all on the new HP craptop. I don't think Ill be buying a new OS for my desktop anytime soon. Vista Ultimate seems to work ok there. If it ain't broke don't....
Besides some of the aesthetics I haven't really noticed that much of a difference between vista/7.

err on my previous post... I must've been a lil tipsy when I said "vista enterprise". I've been out of the windows desktop game for a while... regardless....
So I grabbed a copy of Windows 7 Enterprise x64 and threw it on a reasonably powered amd dual core box I have lying around.
I like it... It's relatively stable so far, quick and meep easy to configure. Tons of wizards so the newbs can accomplish technical tasks relatively easily(reminds me of osx a little bit). It looks nice, and is pretty functional. I like it better than xp.
Not quite as polished as osx, but unlike osx, Win7 doesn't come bundled with a superiority complex. I'll keep it as my multimedia workstation OS (photoshop, cubase, reason, etc...). The rest of the computers running around the house will continue to run linux, as I live with a bunch of miscreants that will pr0n/virii any computer they touch.

Ok, so I've had a chance to use Win7 Ultimate for a few days on my new PC and I'm pretty meeping impressed with it so far.
The install was, by far, the easiest Windows install I've ever seen. Every one of the drivers for my new hardware were auto-detected and installed properly. Even the Belkin wireless card auto installed. Usually these meepers are a pain in the meep, requiring drivers to be installed first, then the card is installed and fingers are crossed that it works without having to uninstall/reinstall it 6 times. With Win7 I just plugged in the card, booted the machine and it was on the web 20 seconds later. It's about time Windows got serious about driver installs.
I love look and feel of the OS. It's very fast. I'm running it on a 3Ghz AMD Phenom II with 4Gigs of RAM, so it's got all the resources it needs to fly and it does fly.
I had originally intended to Install Vista Ultimate on this box but my 16 YO was a Beta tester for Win7 and convinced me to try it. I'm glad I took his advice. It's a meepload better than Vista, and I actually liked Vista.
I haven't found anything I don't like about it yet.

I tested mine after reading meepbox's comment. I'm not having any problem at all with YouTube. My site also uses flash and it works fine on my Win7 box. I'm using Chrome but I tested the default install of IE and flash works there as well.
Nurgs, I had that disc issue with my laptop under Vista when I first installed it. I had to turn off the disc search cache. Vista was constantly indexing files for a quick search and for some reason it never stopped indexing after about a week I just shut it off and then all was quiet. It sounded like there was a tiny machine gun in my hard drive until I turned that feature off.

I've been running Win7Ultra on my new HTPC since I built it and I've been really liking it a lot. I recently loaded it up on my Inspiron 9200 and I like it even more as a daily workhorse. All of my audio applications work very nice with it and it's definitely quicker than Vista. It boots faster and it definitely installs faster.
I found this awesome how-to list for it. There are some goodies on there regarding user-friendliness, new features and keyboard shortcuts... etc.
I still have Linux Mint on a separate harddrive but I'm really pretty hooked on Win7Ultra at the moment. It's been pretty damned bullet proof so far.
