Foreign must-see films

Let's try to suggest rare/lesser known, but truly great foreign movies here. Please pitch in.

...And the best vampire movie of 2008 is:

Let the Right One In
IMDB

Potent, amazing movie experience from some director in Sweden that REALLY should make more movies. Currently hovering in my top 10 movies of all time. I can't stop thinking about it four days after watching it -- and that almost doesn't happen.

You owe it to yourself to procure and watch it ASAP.

list of not so rare but 'must-see' foreign flicks: oldboy lone wolf and cub stalker amor es perros

list of rare but not as 'must-see' foreign flicks: return of the prodigal son (armenian) pistol opera the death of mr. lazarescu tears of the black tiger

Here's another:

Black Cat, White Cat by Emir Kusturica

I guarantee you that you haven't seen a "romantic comedy" like that before.

Crackalackin: Black Cat, White Cat

Seconded. I recall loathing, then eventually loving the main female character. As a bonus...

There is a sighting of ancient bobo at 2:49 in this clip.

Here's one I liked:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0808417/

It's an animated film about the Iranian revolution. Cool animation, historically acurate (sort of, its biographical), and fun to watch. Its in french, but I'm pretty sure it has English dub.

Oldboy was great, but I think Lady Vengeance was the best of his "Vengeance" trilogy. I would recommend checking all three movies out.

Survive Style 5+ is basically a Japanese Tarantino movie that's both fun and funny.

Versus is a samurai/yakuza/zombie action flick.

Finally found this one after some Googling: Irrversible.

This is a great movie that kinda starts at the end before taking you on a wild trip toward the beginning. It's a bit like Memento (another film I loved) but way more twisted, shocking and realistic (read: better). It makes you feel a bit dirty after watching some of the scenes.

I actually hate the meep out of this movie. I can appreciate that it achieves what the director was shooting for and would even extend charity to call it "art", but watching it was pure farts.

Considering our track record of agreeing on things, this does not surprise me. It was "different" to watch. Almost like having a dream that you just kind of had to experience - but I found it quite suspenseful and satisfying at the close (open?).

Oldboy for sure. Although I'm also partial to the twisted work of Takashi Miike:

 • Ichi the Killer
 • Audition
 • Gozu
 • Dead or Alive
 • Full Metal Yakuza

leolo is pretty good.

Cemetary Man (Dellamorte Dellamore) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109592/

Kind of a dark comedy about an undertaker during a zombie uprising. One of my favorite films of all time.

The Monster (Il Monstro) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110570/

Roberto Benigni is a local idiot who becomes the prime suspect in the hunt for a serial meep killer. Benigni is kind of like an italian Mr. Bean and completely hilarious. He was also in "Down by Law" which stars Tom Waits and is another excellent movie.

dropkick: Oldboy for sure. Although I'm also partial to the twisted work of Takashi Miike: - Ichi the Killer

i disagree.

Battle Royale (worth a watch) I second City of God as a great movie RIngu Check out the Doc's that Werner Herzog has made Ong Bak

Here's another:

The Closet http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0243493/

This is one meep of a movie, and one meep of a French comedy. It does deal with (fake) homomeepuality as a central plot vehicle, but if you're secure enough to handle this, you will be richly rewarded.

Man Bites Dog This is one of my favorites.

I just watched a pretty good li'l movie, a solid B. Would have been a B+ if it were not for one very unlikely character action.

It's a Spanish film called Timecrimes. Well executed despite a low budget.

EDIT: Removed fuking spoilers.

^ no doubt. especially if you're a fan of 'flight of the conchords'

Au Revoir les Enfants is an amazing film. Set at a French Catholic boys school during WWII, where a Jewish boy's parents have enrolled him as a gentile to evade deportation.

One of Louis Malle's finest works, and one of my all time favorites.
