2008 Presidential Debate
Taking it in now, I think it was almost a draw on points. Obama was strong with plans and direction, but McCain used his experience to mount surprisingly fluid arguments and points.
I said "almost" because I noticed McCain's dirty pool.
I was infuriated by a few of McCain's tactics.
John McCain either chuckled, breathed heavily or shuffled his papers in direct contact with the microphone any time his rhetoric was challenged. Also, he often relied on catch-phrases to truncate his message when necessary. These tactics show a fear of failing in logic, direction or reason.
Edge - Obama.

If anything I thought their posture during the debate was interesting. When Obama ripped on McCain, McCain came off looking uncomfortable, but when McCain went after Obama, Obama looked a lot more unphased.

For McCain this was, at best, a tie. But he didn't need a tie, he needed a decisive win, and he clearly didn't get it. Advantage Obama.

For once, with a marriage ahead of me and a future stepson that tells me he loves me, I feel like I can relevantly take part in a discussion like this. I agree with Phlebas, Obama's proposals will directly benefit me and those I care about. Unfortunately, his health care proposals will not go into effect till it's too late, but my fiance is faced with the prospect of having no health care for a year and a half starting in February. She has to take time off from work for school and although our stepson will be covered by CHIP, she will be on a waiting list for State care that might take as long as it takes for her to finish school. She has some health issues that definitely require insurance to be able to deal with, so this is a Bad Thing. And a thing that is a long time coming in this country. Health care should NOT be a for-profit endeavor.
Furthermore, Obama will lower taxes in ways that actually affect myself and our family. To give you an idea of our finances at the moment, even the $250 a month (which is always always late) in child support makes a huge difference. Granted, she will be done with nursing school in a little under two years and will start in a field with a lot of security, decent pay, good benefits, and very flexible scheduling. At that point, I'll be able to return to school hopefully and get my doctorate in psychology. Between next summer and then however, we will be living off of $9500 a year in student loans and what I will be making, which will probably be 15-20k before taxes. Obviously, out of this needs to come the cost of her books and school, getting there, and the things we need to do for our little one. There might be a big crisis on Wall Street right now, however, I have mini crises all the time and they are going to get worse before they get better, especially in the next year. We've been smart, paying for the majority of our wedding stuff now, before her leaving work really kicks in. We're also planning a wedding that will be extremely cheap, between $1200 and $2000 total. However, there will certainly be money issues once I move and a McCain presidency is terrifying in that regard.

How much do you make a year? Are you extremely rich? Have you even taken a look at the tax cuts proposed by McCain and Obama? Only 5% of people will NOT get tax cuts with Obama, and they are those who make over $250000. What have the Republicans done lately that makes you feel like you've been helped out? Or that would make someone like me feel like I've gotten help?

This debate was suprisingly unexciting, and suprisingly low on actual content. McCain does seem pretty edgy though, and his complete avoidance of eye-contact was interesting. The Palin one coming up should be pretty fun.

The little bit I saw of this, if I was Joe Six-pack American, McCain would scare me. They were talking about how the bailout was going to affect their spending plans, And McCain said that he thought a spending freeze might be the go. No new spending at all, except for defence (read- war) and veterans care. Look after his veteran mates and all the new veterans from the war that he won't end and meep the rest of you poor saps.
Luckily for me, I am NOT Joe Six-pack American, I live in a civilised country where the less fortunate are looked after, at least to a certain extent.

Obama clearly won in the areas of delivery and demeanor, coming across as agreeable and amenable to differing opinions. For those that want a change from the chronic distaste shown by politicians for their opponents, Obama demonstrated this change in approach. McCain came across as an meep that enjoyed it a bit too much when he get one over on Obama, and for the base and those that like someone who fist pumps after a score, McCain won.
On issues, for the majority of Americans, Obama's plans will directly benefit them, either immediately (tax break) or over the long term. For those that think Trickle Down economics (RE: Voodoo econ) are the meep, then they obviously won't like Obama. But for the majority of rich meeps without any social conscious, they already were deep in McCain's meep. For those that just learned of the differences between the two candidates, they clearly would side with Obama.
As for being genuine, they both won in different ways. McCain clearly loves the military and vets, and his investment in their needs was obvious. So, for retired vets, they will fall McCain's way. For current enlisted men and women, that think they have totally taken the brunt of the Repub's war, they just want a meeping change or stoppage of the meep tours in Iraq. For them, a change of strategy is Obama.
Overall, I think that they both won, but McCain had a lot more to gain by Obama's failures, which just didn't materialize. As much as McCain tried to harp of Obama's failure to grasp understanding of complex foreign policy issues, Obama clearly demonstrated the opposite.
Based on expectations, Obama clearly won. McCain did what he was supposed to do: illustrate his experience. In terms of message and apperance, McCain just looked old, angry, and disrespectful, while Obama came across as cool, respectful, and congnizant that he wasn't always right or that McCain and he shared the same opinion. This was a true departure from typical partisan meep, which is supposedly what the populace always clamors for.
Obama is on the road to victory. As a matter of fact, I predict a landslide for congressional dems and a wider victory for Obama. He is the man to change things, as McCain has clearly been Borg'ed by the Republican platform, regardless of how many times he states that he is a Maverick. I would agree that he once was a Mav, but is now beholden to the Sith Lord of Repubs.

Mr. McCain's campaign had actually declared victory as early as 10 a.m. Friday, hours before the debate here and even before Mr. McCain had committed to attend. It mistakenly released an Internet advertisement to the Wall Street Journal showing Mr. McCain proudly looking into the distance the words "McCain Wins Debate!"
-From the NYT
