meepberry meepz

Ok.

I got my first Blackberry and I think I love the fuk out of it. I know there are a zillion BB forums on the net, but I'm more interested in hearing meep from nigers I trust, hence this thread.

What should I be doing with it that I'm not, what apps are essential, things to avoid, etc?

I'm already using Opera Mini & Google Maps (gives me half-assed GPS functionallity), Facebook and Flickr.

Let 'er rip.

JmIRC sucks.

LOki: JmIRC sucks.

Already found that out. I get some invalid tunnel error when I try connecting to #megarad.

I've heard that there is a swell IRC app you have to pay for, but the name of it escapes me.

I find that BB chat fills the little IRC shaped hole in my life rather well, as all my favorite nigs are getting Blackberrys.

If you think of it, let me know. Until then, I'll keep looking.

BB Messenger was the perfect end to a perfect Father's Day. Thanks, man.

Alright. APN is set, MDS proxy disabled where applicable. BBWeather is hosed. VNC=hosed. IRC=hosed.

What am I doing wrong?

Get some empower html enabled email. then you don't have to look at all those fuked up links to pics when you are getting your email.

Get that meep here.

Warning! it cost $29. No HTML for poor nigers.

Empower looks pretty cool, but why shell out the dough when you can either forward everything to a Gmail account and use this, or wait for v4.5?

True that if you are not using a corporate account. I use gmail as well, but the majority of my mail is work related and passing through my BES so it makes no sense for me to forward it to gmail. Hence the expensive and seemingly unnecessary HTML viewer.

Plus, I put the $29 on my corporate card.

Winamp Remote + Blackberry = MASSIVE WIN

All your movies and music anywhere, anytime.

I think you have to be running BB OS 4.5 or higher for the streaming to work. I've got 4.5.0.69 if any of you meepgots are interested in it. PM me (lol).

I use Jivetalk for AIM -- like $20. I really only use AIM for work these days but this lets me take lunch without fear that I'm jerking off at the dreamcatcher store while meep is catching fire back at work.

It's a really well-done app and I have zero complaints.

Google reader works well for a stripped-down RSS reader.

Incidentally, I suspect the problem with the various IRC apps on the Blackberry is the nature of the Blackberry's networking stack itself. Evidence...

  • IRC requires a real-time ongoing connection (in a way different from AIM, I believe)
  • Every single Blackberry IRC app I know gets disconnected after a few seconds of idle time

If that's true, then it doesn't matter which IRC app you download. They all come broken right out of the box. (Please prove me wrong.)

In the meantime, midpssh as Crackalackin links will get you to the Linux box you smartly run at home with IRC and screen.

Could you maybe run a script in the background to ping every couple of seconds and keep to connection active?

Wotak: 4 Sale: One top quality POS. Gitcher bids on.

That was just comparative analysis. The 8320 is a solid phone. It's just no 8900.

It's in near-pristine condition. No scratches on the screen, one little scratch on the battery cover and a little nick in the rubber behind the mute meepon on top. I still have the original box, all original accessories, plus a nice pleather belt holster. It's been well cared for, plus it's unlocked. All it will need any time soon is a new trackball ($9.99), which is just a routine maintenance item.

Unlocked units are going for $250-$300 on eBay. I'll be more reasonable than that. (But not much; I've taken excellent care of it for good reason.)

I have a BB, and these are the apps I like:

Viigo - free, badass RSS/Web site reader which can import your Google Reader stuff. It lets you read the feed from any site, share the individual stories on all the popular sharing site including Twitter and click to go to the story on the site.

Opera Browser - free, let's you read sites, like Linkswarm, in their normal format by zooming in and out.

Ubertwitter - free, has lots of features including reading only the updates from people nearby, trending topics, search and so on

Flickr - free, upload, download, manage, browse, etc.

Pandora - free, connects to your Pandora account and streams the music, allows you to skip and rate too

GMail, Google Maps, Reader, Notebook, Search, Chat, etc - free and awesome

Qik - free, stream live video from the phone

Poynt - free, a yellow pages, maps mashup

Amazon.com - free, direct, fast connection to your Amazon account, which is handy for comparison shopping, also has a weird feature where you can take a photo of an object and force an outsourced Indian worker to give you the price (not kidding)
