HUHZ!!! Tell me what to do with this

I have an Acer <blink>meep</blink> Aspire 5000 laptop. It's a little less than 2 years old and about a month after the warranty expired it started overheating during CPU-intensive tasks like... unzipping a zip file. Or loading a webpage with Java on it. I can do things like type this out on it because firefox uses 100% of my memory, not my CPU.

I remember from reading a thread elsewhere that I've now lost the URL for that some dude's Aspire's pipe running to the heatsink was either disconnected somehow from the sink or was literally melted away by the sheer 2000 degree temperature of an AMD Turion 64. This thing has always run hot as mothermeepers (I nearly burned my meep on it once) and since the fan picks up like a jet engine but only blows lukewarm air out instead of the sweatlodge-furnace air I was used to before it shuts off, I suspect the heatsink. That hot air is probably just sitting right beside the CPU burning it alive.

This thing cost about 900 bucks new. I really don't think it's worth fixing, so can I do anything with it? I'm going to be building my main computer/gaming box soon after I get my own place, so I really won't need this anymore. The only thing I can think of is sell it for about 100 bucks in parts or give it to my sister for writing papers or downloading goatfisting videos - whatever kids in school do these days. It would make a nice router/Linux filebox if it wasn't a laptop, so I dunno.

tl;dr:

1: boiling meep
2: busted heatsink in laptop
3: How might I make it useful considering it's handicapped?

Pictures of it later if you want them.

May I suggest you do this with your laptop:

Take your girlfriend on a cruise. At the correct romantic moment, recreate that scene from Titanic by standing with her on the very front of the ship with her and together fling the laptop into the welcoming arms of the sea. Have a fellow passenger film it and later post the footage to the swarm.

If you don<code>t want to get into actually repairing,I would build myself a "case" so that the laptop is raised up from whatever it</code>s sitting on.Put some fans on this "case" so that it blows onto the CPU.

Do it hillbilly style with some 2x4`s and cut the plastic from the bottom of the laptop and point fans right underneath...

I have exactly the same problem with my laptop. I have to put it outside to convert Xvids to DVD, and even then it will only get all the way through if its a reasonable cold day. I find that giving the vents a good blast of compressed air does the trick for a while. Im guessing theres about ten tonne of dusty meep inside my laptop which is adding to the problem.

you're a fairly technically apt person - take that meep apart and see if you can fix it.

we had a refurb dell laptop at my old job that ran out of warranty and started to do the same thing. I found the service manual on dell's support site and it actually gives you exploded views of the entire machine. i ended up taking it apart and removing the insane amount of dust that had built up in it's heat-sink/fan assembly. you could also determine if the HSF is replaceable while you have it opened up.

2 years ago, and last year too, there were a number of laptop battery recalls. It may not be the CPU that is getting hot, but the battery (when you put sufficient current drain on it).

The batteries were catching on fire and people were suing the manufacturers.

You can probably google for laptop battery recalls and figure out if yours was included. No point in burning the house down to unzip porn no matter how hot it is.... (And you probably can't sue them to get a cool Alienware laptop because they would just say "we told you so".)

You have instructions and you still haven't taken that meep apart?

You bring shame on your bloodline.

Actually up to this point I've been unable to find instructions on this particular model. Thanks meta. I'll definitely try to pull it apart and see what's up.

Honestly I'd like to get rid of this thing. Like I said, it has always run hot and is pretty outdated now.

One could conceivably purchase a walk in cooler and accomplish all tasks using said laptop in the deep freeze, thereby avoiding overheating.

I turned this into a shell a couple months ago, and like most things I do, wish I'd done it sooner.

If you've got an old PC sitting around and think it's junk, try putting Linux on it and be awesome like myself.

So, like two meep years later I port my shell to a VM on one of these and finally take the laptop apart. Sure enough, it's got some ridiculous Chinese-Wal-Mart style heatsink action going on. I slapped some new thermal paste on it and it hasn't shut off due to heat since. You can still fry an egg on it but that's the Turion for you.

The real lesson here? It's still worthless. Don't buy Acer laptops.
