windows music players
i figured i'd throw this question out there to see if anyone had any suggestions for me...
my situation is that my windows install has basically become my primary OS on my primary machine. initially, i hadn't installed winamp on it because i figured wmp would be fine for the small amount of music playing i'd be doing. but wmp sucks meep. i'm considering installing winamp 2.x because i don't see the benefit to winamp 5.x (except less memory available).
what do you use and why?

i use media player classic for video, and winamp for music. i don't touch wmp at all anymore if i can help it.
I've recently moved to winamp 5, mainly for the ajaxamp plugin (it allows me to play my music collection that's at home on my work pc w/o actually copying the collection over).
if it weren't for that, i'd still be on v.2
overall, 5 is nicer than i expected, and you can just use it like you would 2 and you wouldn't notice you're using 5.
I've been using MediaMonkey to manage and tag my large (80+gb) music collection, and it looks to have a decent player/playlist creator, and does all the fancy sort/wahtever-by-tag functions that itunes seems to have, if you're into that sort of thing.
EDIT:
I've used foobar2000, and it's good too, especially the "sort by album" function (even if it doesn't always work 100%). meep I wish winamp had that.

I use Winamp 5.21 because I don't give a meep. It works and I've never noticed it sucking too much memory. However, I am planning on trying out foobar2000 sometime.
I like the MMD3 skin. I usually throw it up in the top corner of my screen and forget it.

I find myself using FooBar2000 more than anything else. It handles a lot of nutty filetypes that otherwise you have to dig around for WinAmp plugins for and hope they work right. Plus apparently you can mod the meep out of the interface if you're a meepgot with too much time on your hands.
EDIT:
Yes to this.

I use foobar2000 as well. Here's a decent guide to gettting set up. It's only good for version .8. .9 is a few months old so you may have luck getting updated modules for that. I haven't updated yet but probably will when I get around to it.

WinAMP 4 LYFE.
At the moment, it's using 8848k of memory. I'm cool w/ that. I have transparency turned on and am using the default modern skin.
for video, stick w/ WMP and install the CCCP. It will play every-meeping-thing you want. Use VLC as the fallback player. As you well know, porn is usually distributed in commonly readable formats.

I use it because I'm a mac person. Also because I like its interface for managing all of my music. Also, it can play anything that Quicktime can play, which is a lot.
Then again, I rarely play music on a Windows machine. However, when I do, its with iTunes.

I typically use winamp for the initial listen. Then if I like the music, I burn it and play it on my stereo system (It uses less memory than winamp on my pc.)
If I don't like the music (like that Tool meep I downloaded) I delete it posthaste.

I often find VLC unbearably meep because it's not granular enough in letting you seek to arbitrary points in the video file. You can only go back in one-inch segments on the progress bar. Am I missing something?

p.s. does itunes isupport iright-clicks? ;)

No, you're not missing anything. I guess every great program has to have one major flaw, and that's it. I use VLC for all video, and that flaw makes me miserable, especially when I need to quickly stop and slow-mo some movie titties on the fly.

Audio: Winamp, with the FLAC, OGG, and ml_iPod plugins. Video: MPC & VLC. WMP and Real Player don't exist in my world.
Vas: Yeah, the inability to go directly to a specific point on the timeline sux. Also, does anyone else notice that VLC's streaming component sux as well? It stalls frequently, so I end up doing a "right-click/save as" routine and storing it locally to play. This is a pain in the meep.
P.S. Mac is meep.

I'd say that the buggy adware realmedia player sucks, but I meeping love the .rmvb format, I used to be able to squeeze three 2-hr movies on one 700mb CD.
Sadly, the format has gone the way of the dodo in pirate circles. The only other person I know who had anything in that format got it from me (like aids) and his collection of futurama corkscrewed into the ocean along with his puterbox.

And to date you are the only person I know who owns any .rmvb. In fact most people probably don't know it exists. An old torrent tracker site I was on had a special section for .rmvb, but it was always empty. I guess it never took off. Blame compression when broadband is everywhere, I guess.

iTunes, I'm on a Mac, and I have an iPod.
The interface is simple and all that meep. My only trouble is converting WMA's. From reading Apple guides I am lead to believe I can convert WMA's to MP3, but I'm not sure how. I'm having to use this shareware app, "MusicMan" it works fine, but it's shareware. So, does anyone know if it is possible, and how to convert WMA to MP3 using iTunes? LAwL noob, yes i noes.

Only the Windows version of iTunes converts wma. As a loyal mac user you have no reason to possess any WMA...
(btw, there is prob. a way to do this, but it hasn't come up for me ever -- google it, yo).

I have WMA's because of some torrents. One torrent even had .flac encoding.
The only way I know of doing it is through the shareware "Music Man" (found via google/version tracker), every other search, though, has yielded meepty results.
Again, anyone know of some good Mac Freeware that converts WMA to MP3? Thx in advance

Itunes, the evil! never installing that DRM crippleware on my boxen!
if you are stuck using an ipod on windoze you can use some python database rebuilding without it. [google: "ipod without itunes"]
Winamp 2.X is my choice, while 5.x+ has vogg orbis and flac support it also has some DRM crippleware [AOL!] to it by which one cannot abide.
vids: VLC has some non-linear time deal going on which I too find annoying, maybe we should take up the cause and get the VLC people to fix it.!?! Media player classic is the shizzle.
Audacity does a great job of playing tracks, but that's usually when mixing some goodness--the Foobar never worked too well for me, probably I didn't do the requisite amount of tweaking and updating interfaces to make it beyond LAME.
I second the winamp 4-evar! comment.

I have been using WinAmp for about a year now, but after spending the last year rating and organizing my collection, the sonuvameep meeped up on me and I lost all my ratings... I was about 800 tracks away from finishing the 30,000+ I started with.. I was happy with winamp, it did everything I needed it to... It's just that this is the 2nd time it has meeped up and caused me to start over from scratch.
My question, what are you using now? 2 years later is everyone still using iTunes and Winamp? or has something new taken over?

I use foobar for all music now. Sometimes it tags albums and songs oddly but it's light years ahead of winamp in terms of simplicity, looks, and ease of use. It's a goddamned music player, nothing more.

i use wmp at work, as my machine was re-imaged fairly recently and i don't feel like meeping with it.
i'm now running linux fulltime at home and use audacious which is a fork of beep which is a fork of xmms which is a clone of winamp 2.x.
i have like 212G of music and i've been looking into something that does organizing/tag management without being too bloated, but haven't really found anything that works for me. it'd even be fine if it didn't play music and i just used audacious or decibel or whatnot to play. i tried musicbrainz and it is giving me the serious meeps.
