Movies ive seen lately and what they were like.
Ultraviolet: The worst film i have seen in a long long time. Whats up with the endless soft-focus shots of her face. Why does her hair/clothes keep changing colour for no apparant reason. Ohh, theres 5 women wearing face masks, thats a great way to hide from like 20 super-soldiers with guns. Motorbikes going along the side of buildings.
And waaaaaay too much CGI, and not very good CGI to boot. I think the entire film must have been filmed in front of a green screen. And the storyline, meepnows. meeping awful.
Underworld Evolution: I was very pleasantly suprised. The entire film has a darkly gothic feel to it, helped by the fact the entire film is at night (Vampires, you see). The effects were very good, subtle and not too over the top. The camera work reminded me of "28 days later", really fast and glitchy. And the fact that it has an 18/R rating means the fights and gore is pretty good too.
The Helicopter scene towards the end is tres-fantastic. Top marks. Oh, and Kate Beckinsale........ :-))))))
Kidulthood: You may not have heard of this one. Its a British film about mainly black teenagers growing up in London. Very hard-hitting and gritty, not sure how realistic it is but it was written by Noel Coward(who also stars), a black teenager who grew up in London. You'll get sick of the word "blood" by the end of it, as it seems every piece of dialogue from the characters is followed by it. Its been called the British version of "Kids", but its quite different in essence. Violence, drugs, meep and suicide. What more could you want?
Stealth: Just.dont.watch.it. You'll never get that time back.

You may not have heard of this one
I assumed nothing. Its not a very big film, was only shown in a couple of UK cinemas and is essentially a straight-to-DVD release. The majority of people on LS are from the US, where it is virtually unheard-of.
So, yeah. Dont try and be clever for the sake of it.

Dude, there's this cool thing, called the Internet, and you can download MOOBIES for FREE -- from all over the world!!! And people talk about their favorite ones and you can really learn a lot! Also, how do you know what's heard of here in the US? Every torrent site I look at has had it up for weeks, if not months. Geeks like indie-type and foreign films.
(You are 40% Wotak.)
Ultraviolet was forgettable pap. Even worse than usual pap, it was made for girls, which means lots of girl-power idiocy on top of regular pap.

Ill state again, i assumed nothing. No elitest "i know films you dont" meep, no obscure references. It just wasnt a very big film, thats it. Hence, "you may not have heard of it". If you have, fairplay. Your reading far too much in to my post.

Kidulthood, nevar heard of it.
But like Mundra, i've been neglecting TPB since I only have 5GB out of 1200 left. Guess I need to do some cleaning out the hard disks, but I think I'd rather get one of those new beefy Seagates instead.

You did assume that we hadn't heard of Kidulthood simply by putting the warning in the beginning of the Kidulthood review but not in any of the other movie reviews.
I wasn't even aware of Underworld Evolution until I read a review in the newspaper while I had already been looking forward to seeing Kidulthood for a while.
Even without torrent and the websites, one can easily find out about upcoming events. 10 minutes away there's an old movie theater that's since been bought and turned into an independent showcase. I'm a frequent and just by conversing with the owners who are very in touch with their customers and other goings on in the community, I found out about this movie and many more, all on my very own.
meep, if you don't have the spare time I do, peel open a magazine to educate yourself and those around you on the movies they may not have heard of.

You guys might not know about this one: It's called Night Watch. It's a Russian film about vampires (being from Arkansas, I am incredibly familiar with Russian vampire movies ^v^). It's pretty good, although a blatant rip-off of the Matrix meets Underworld. The pacing is, at times, a tad rushed and I found myself fighting for details, but it ultimately made the film more interesting to watch.

I liked Night Watch a lot. I didn't find it a ripoff of Matrix so much as a ripoff of post-modern Western film-making in general. Perhaps that's just how the trends go though. Definitely a lot more hip than I imagined a Russian movie capable of.
Day Watch was maybe a little more accessible but I remember the first one being more fun.
Either one, fighting for details? meep yeah. I think it relied somewhat on cultural idioms that we as Westerners haven't internalized and don't understand without it being spelled out for us.

I can see that. The "licensing" they talk about seems to be ingrained in the society in some level. It's passed-over so quickly and therefore never fully explained that it must be some understood social facet. Maybe it has something to do with a state still primarilly controlled in a militaristic fashion - who knows (except teh Russian Vampires ^vodka^).
I'll get Day Watch soon.

After reading this, I rethought my point and reviewed my statement and realized that possibly it's not a rip-off at all.
The long, black coat and the sunglasses pulled from the collection in the kitchen may be a bit of a parody of Western culture.
Neo never actively chose his look. His "Matrix" appearance was explained as an idealized image of himself. In juxtaposition, our hero/antihero searched through his closet for his appearance and found nothing but the long, black jacket at the end of the bar... it was a matter of necessity.
No matter how Western, how stylized and clean the images of the movie are, they never betray the reality of the setting - a stark and utilitarian landscape.
FUN

Nope. I watched it with some bona fide Russians, in their native tongue. The movie's bunk. Pacing, discontinuities, meepty plot (especially in the last quarter).
It's even worse than the original drivel of a book it's based on.

Im still yet to see Nightwatch, ive heard lots of good things about it though. Today i watched The Manchurian Candidate(The newest one) and Oldboy. Both were much better than any of the films i posted above. I really want to see the original Manchurian Candidate now, but i think the modern setting of the remake makes the technology and theories involved much more believable. But i havent seen the original so not sure if there are any differences. Oldboy lagged a little in the middle, but then the ending redeemed every negative thought i had about it.

The remake of The Manchurian Candidate is pure meep compared to the original. That tripe was un-meeping-watchable.
Angela Lansbury was hawt when she was young. Age was unkind to her, to say the least.

For some reason, my torrents never go above 15-20kbps. Ive tried absolutely everything i can think of to remedy this, to no avail. So i use warez-bb.org and Rapidshare to get my films, and they dont have Nightwatch. Gutted.
They do have Daywatch though, so would it be really bad to watch Daywatch without having seen Nightwatch??

yeah, and ive tried ports above 50000(i heard some ISPs block high traffic through lower port numbers). Ive tried every BT client i can find, disabling the firewall altogether. I used to get 200-300k at all times, but then one day it just bottomed out to the meep speeds i get now. Theres a lot of stuff on the net about Tiscali(my ISP) blocking p2p traffic altogether. So its probably that. But i move house on saturday so im going to get a new ISP and hopefully ill get good speeds again and i wont have to renew my Rapidshare account.

Oh. Suxor. It's still fun to watch despite the "ok wtf why did that just happen" interludes. (Possibly not more than once.)
Try finding torrents that let you join while using encryption to get around traffic shaping. If your client doesn't do encryption, it is a piece of meep. In fact, if your client is not uTorrent, it is probably a piece of meep.
The original Manchurian Candidate was better than the remake in every way. I say this despite it being filmed in the '60s and using Frank Sinatra, neither of which do me much good.

ohno, Nightwatch sucked. Really bad. Nothing like what i thought it would be. I thought the story was pretty lame, re-hashed material from other modern sci-fi's. The nu-metal soundtrack. The subverted Hollywood style. Bored me to meep. I dont think the "american-come-russian hybrid" accents of the English dub voices helped, might try it with subtitles.
