Everytime I try to run a space battle, it freezes up. Is this just a bug in the game? Anything hardware related?

What's your hardware setup? What type of graphics card do you have? Have you recently installed new drivers for it? Do you need to? Does this happen with other games or just this one? Etc, etc.
This mentions freezing.

It's got an AMD athlon 64 3000+, a NVIDIA GeForce 6600, a gig of RAM, and, I'm guessing, integrated audio. It's my friend's computer, so I don't know about the audio.

Search on it indicates that freezing at certain points might be a problem with this game.
Only things I can think of would be to update drivers for your video card or try it with all settings in the game set to low.
