new music to listen to

I'm looking for some really wild and awesome new music to listen to. If you know any bands that are a good time, I'd appreciate a recommendation.

some qualifications

1. Must be mainstream enough for me to download using bittorrent or dc++ or kazaa or something. I will not go hunting for vinyl.

2. I've already heard of and have a soft spot in my heart for Radiohead and Jimi Hendrix. Try to recommend music that is good and interesting but not super mainstream. That said, use common sense and refer to number one, if in doubt about how esoteric to get.

3. Don't make a list of all your favorite bands. One or two really good recommendations is pretty much all I'm looking for right now, so recommend one or two good bands and some songs I can check out.

kthankx

Decider: Admin

Dinozoa, it might help if you could narrow down your request - you say "anything but metal" then you say don't give a long list.

What are you wanting out of this music? Are you wanting vocal or instrumental? Current music or old school or older than that? English-speaking only or from other countries, too? Stuff you can sing/play along to, or stuff that will blow your mind with its complexity?

Biffy Clyro

Dude, there is a little box to the righthand side of the video. It Says, "EMBED" Click that, it will turn BLUE, make sure you have highlighted(blued) the entire line. Right-click, select COPY. Come right back here and PASTE. This stupidity cannot continue.

Sorry, this is quite old ,but good, music. Now taking suggestions, I'm way out of the loop.

You all need to find where you stored your meep and commence listening to Amon Amarth. Every song is about Vikings rocking faces. Valhall Awaits Me is probably their best song or maybe Pursuit of Vikings.

If you're into some prog rock, then you'll want to check out Oceansize:

Start out with the track called Massive Bereavement, and give it a meeping chance.

Also, Rachel Yamagata. And before you take me seriously, do an image search. She is absolutely NOT hot. And she still sells. That is what you call pure talent. Literally.

Found the last two on the GTA4 soundtrack of all places; though Rockstar seems rather innovation averse at the moment, they do have good taste in music.

Dinozoa if you're looking for good hip-hop I'd recommend Lupe fiasco, Talib Kweli, Hilltop Hoods, De la soul, Jurassic five and Ceelo green. Those are my favorite hip-hop artists in no particular order and this is just what i personally like. I only recommend these artists over all others because so far these are the only artists I've found that have meaning in their songs and they're usually more mature than the whole big cars and stacks of money rappers that flood the market. Hope your search goes well

Phlebas: Mastodon, Oblivion http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kcErNWtw1o
Seconded, hugely. I just finished like a three-week self-indoctrination where I listened to this album on a loop for like 8 hours a day. It's amazing. I was a little disappointed with the lyrics given that this is meant to be a 'concept' album but the music is like meeping woahz. Didn't hit me the first time through, either -- had to do headphones while doing other meep and then started noticing really awesome things in the background.

I had the same sort of long-term development period with it. I instantly loved Oblivion, but put the album on the home theater surround system and just couldn't get into it the first time through. That's where your headphone comment really rings true. There is some complex and interesting stuff going on under the surface that you really need a good sound system or headphones to get into.

You meep.

Has any of you gone back and checked out the earlier albums?

Also, what the meep is up with good albums involving Rasputin? First Type-O, now Mastodon. Awesome.

I second this... De-loused in the comatorium is an excellent album. Very progressive, like if Yes had kids and they started a band.

Also on the topic of Mastodon, Leviathan is a good album. It's a concept album, based off of Moby meep... pretty neat idea.

My favorite album right now is Grizzly Bear - Yellow House. Very well composed, harmonic and general badassery.

Phlebas: Has any of you gone back and checked out the earlier albums?

i celebrate their entire catalog.

the full-lengths go: remission, leviathan, blood mountain, crack the skye. they also put out call of the mastodon in 2006, which includes their first ep (lifesblood) plus some older stuff.

generally, the more recent releases are more refined. remission is very sludgy and screamy; the drums are looser and more jazzy. there are still plenty proggish hints in the change-ups.

leviathan is an amazing second album. evolving from remission, the prog touches are expanded upon. everything's tightened up and the songwriting is a lot stronger.

blood mountain is very good, but it's never really captivated me the way their other stuff has. i'm not sure if i just haven't spent enough time with it or what.

crack the skye is the only album that's mostly sung rather than growled/screamed.

summary: get leviathan.

also, check out their song (youtube) for the aqua teen hunger force movie. you can't go wrong with lyrics like:

If I see you videotaping this movie Satan will rain down your throat with hot acid And disolve your testicles and turn your guts into snakes

This is a copyrighted movie for Time Warner If I find you sold it on eBay I will break into your house and tear your wife in half

also, lol.

Opeth is great, Gogol Bordello does not disappoint ever. Also, check out Three inches of blood (not their newer albums) for your viking metal fix needs.
