PDA/Phone
So a friend of mine @ work got a Treo Palm 600 PDA/Cellphone and I have started to think about replacing my current cell phone. Does anyone on L/S use a PDA/phone or have any advice? I would like having the 'qwerty' keyboard and would like to have a camera although it seems like the one on his treo 600 pretty much sucks.

I've been using the Treo600 since it came out November 2003. I've replaced it 3 times (Thanks Best Buy) but other than that it's worked out sweet. I've got email, IM, SSH, IRC... pretty much everything I could every want out of a internet enabled PDA on it.
I have been known to make phone calls on it too from time to time.
If I could actually get a decent price for my 600 I wouldnt mind upgrading to the 650. Bluetooth plus high-def display would be very nice.

Played with a Blackberry, found it too wide. It was like holding on to a pingpong paddle.
EDIT: The camera on a Treo 650 is way better than the camera on my Motorola v550.

The thing about the Blackberry is... I don't seem to like it.
There's something kind of odd about it. It's like they managed to cram some high-tech guts into a 1978 scientific calculator case or something. This may not be true on the latest model, though.
I'm pretty sure I hate the scroll wheel, too.

I need to play with the Blackberry some more before passin on it but I tend to agree that it is a funky size and I would really like to have a semi-quality camera too. I think the $400 price tag is the only thing slowing me down on the treo 650. When the price is getting close to that of picking up a bargain laptop or a new transmission for my Mirage I start to hesitate.

Sure type is pretty sweet. Basically its still a qwerty keyboard like a normal BlackBerry handheld but with two letters per key. As you type it guesses what you are typing. It works pretty well except for slang and swear words, but if you type meep 4 times in a row, its programmed into the phone and you are good to go.
Also Sprint does carry the BlackBerry. Most major carriers worldwide are hoping on board if they already haven't

Tech quibble: if Suretype is any better than T9, it's probably only because T9 systems (as I've seen them) assign 3 or 4 letters to a key, whereas the 7100g assigns only two. So same exact tech, I'll bet -- you just get your match 1/3 quicker because there are fewer options to tax the CPU.
I could be talking out my entire meep, of course, and RIM invented some neato new predictive text method: I'm just not counting on it.
EDIT: TYPO FIXED THAT IS ALL FOR NOW!

I'm currently haggling with sprint for a Treo 650. If they don't give it to me I saw some offers for $180 with new service at cingular. Only downside is cingular rapes you on bandwidth charges (unlimited is like $40+ a month) whereas sprint has a decent rate (10 or 15 a month depending on if you get the discounted vision offered to you).

One more reason to go BlackBerry!
How the Blackberry became Sacred Friday, July 8, 2005 Updated at 10:05 AM EDT
Globe and Mail Update
The following letter is in response to Jack Kapica's story Why the calls didn't go through (July 8):
"You might be interested to learn that we heard from our brother-in-law Paul in London within minutes of him receiving our e-mail. We simply e-mailed him on my husband's Blackberry and got Paul's answer ("I'm fine, just missed the explosions by a half hour") from his Blackberry right away.
Paul has a strange tendency to be in disaster zones at weird times. He was in Thailand during the tsunami, and he and his family were safe only because they decided to eat breakfast late and not be on the beach at the exact wrong time. Once again the only thing that worked was his Blackberry. We found out he was fine right away because his e-mail worked, even when there was no more phone, water, electricity and he was looking down at hundreds of dead bodies on the beach.
Same thing happened a few years ago when he was in the Mexican jungle, and we needed to reach him regarding a family emergency in Canada. (No I'm not making this up.) Cellphones didn't work, but his Blackberry did, and we found him.
Advertisements
In our family, the Blackberry is a sacred thing, because no matter how many disasters we face around the globe we always know immediately that everyone is safe, and no amount of money can buy that kind of peace.
The guys at RIM are my heroes."

I didn't realize that cingular was charging so much for the online access either. I went down to the store last week ready to get the treo but the service fee really took the wind out of my sails. I have too many rollover minutes and have added several family members to my plan to leave cingular, I just hope they get their act together and offer some competative rates so I can finally be one of the cool kids with a PDA/Phone.

Ok Time to dig up this thread again. Its been a while and the technology has improved or at least moved on a bit. In an obsessive toy buying fit I just bought a gps device & software for racing (http://maxqdata.com/MQGPS.htm) that requires a bluetooth connection to stream data, with a Windows Mobile 5 (non smartphone edition) device recommended. Of course once I dropped $300 on the overpriced GPS unit & software pkg I just HAD to skip over all the cheap used PDAs and Last Years Pocket PC/Phones for the newest most expensive piece of meep Cingular would sell me the Cingular 8525 made by HTC Hermes with the 'broadband' speed 3g internet.
So, does anyone have any personal experience with this device or windows mobile in general? Any tips & tricks or Any software that I should play with? Also how about some of the best Mobile content sites?

Holy meeping meep I got WOTAKed for getting a Windohs Mobile device.
Sir ~ I take this as a leather glove to the face.
In my defense just look at how neat the GPS software is (for road racing / autocross)
(red = braking, blue = acceleration, width of rectangle = lateral acceleration)
In all honesty I only got into this whole Pocket PC thing to run that GPS device but now I'm up to my ears or over my head in Windows M 5. I did look at and like th Blackjack but that runs W.M.5 Smartphone edition which doesn't yet work with the GPS thingy.

That is pretty cool. I never imagined you'd be able to map meep like braking and acceleration. I guess that must require a pretty granular sample rate.
Obviously the debate about Windows Mobile vs. Alternatives is a tad mature for you, but if you're enjoying your toy, so be it. If you're willing to spend the money, I imagine there's some cool stuff. I've been thinking about one of the newer Blackberries, and as far as I know, there's no warez for those. The example I've heard -- a $99 SSH client -- meeps me right up my head's meep. Palm had a decent third-party software gang years ago, but they're not even on the map for me anymore.

Indeed I was forced to jump into the mobile computing market far past my knowledge of the environment. But since I'm here I'm trying to sponge up as much knowledge as I can. Not that I condone such behavior as blatant software piracy but I have noticed that there is a fair amount of Pocket PC software on some of the torrent sites for the plucking. But in as little as one day I have discovered that W.M. is lacking some pretty simple functionality out of the box. I couldn't even find a simple timer when cooking my rice for dinner last night. Come to find out I have to turn to 3rd party SW for that sort of thing.

What I meant was, the debate is a little ripe, a little late for you -- as you've already bought your device and thus the point is moot.

That does kinda look like meep; if Capt Earplug was getting paid for that robotic review, he didn't do a very good job for anybody.
I like how his thoughtful investigation into the context of the word 'dash' considers the same dictionary usage two times over, but ignores the obvious it's-also-a-letter-on-your-keyboard-you-robotic-dumbmeep epiphany underscored by this being the digital Internet age and that being a digital Internet device, and whatnot.
meepbox, if you're looking for cheap, there may well be better/cheaper, and if you're not, I know there's better. The last Blackberry I was toying with, the Pearl, is like $100 now.

I have been happy for the most part with my BB 8830, the planer and calendar work very well and it syncs up great with my Email. It does however get a little irritating when I'm at my desk and my PC tells me I have new mail and about 5 seconds later the phone tells me the same thing.
The browser can be a bit sluggish at times and the GPS is a little quirky, it's a bit slow to update and a real meep to find north sometimes.
Voice dialing works like a dream if you want to call person X mobile or home etc. It also works will with the Blue tooth ear piece, just don't leave the house with one on or you will look like a pretentious meepwad.
It is rather wide but thin and if you were to hold it to your ear for a long conversation it will annoy the meep out of you as you can't really do the pinch between the ear and neck thing with it.

How is everyone liking their smart phones these days? I get the gut feeling I should resist the iphone but maybe I am being too anti-apple in my sentiment. Tmobile has better data rates and way better customer service than Cingular.
If you have to stick with Windows Mobile, I suggest upgrading to WM6.1 as well as finding the phone modders for your phone and following their advice as what hacks work well and not well with your phone, and which version of modded OS they recommend. I do like HTC phones.
This is my favorite site for phone mods, tips, downloads, etc: XDA-Developers. Your HTC Hermes, if you still have it, is a third of the way down.
Also, my buddy gave me a white-screened iPhone today that he wants me to see if I can do anything to fix. If I can, he'll sell it to me for 50 bucks. Any experience anyone?

Thanks for the xda-developers link.
It looks like after the jailbreak the iPhone works fine with my old sim so I should be able to bounce back and forth between the iphone & HTC. The iphone is kind of slick but a little less than utilitarian. I've already been put off that I can't use the touchscreen with wet fingers which means you can't answer or hang up the phone. Also it is idiotic that the text screen won't flip horizontal to allow the user to use both thumbs to text. The lack of a MMS messaging service is kind of dumb too, everything has to be emailed. I've used the cydia store to download some themes and packages there are some neat apps but not a perfect substitute for the app store for most I would imagine.
I looked into the white screen problem and it seems pretty common. I'd try using itunes to restore it by holding the home and power meepon for 20 seconds while plugged in. From what the forums seem to say you may have to try several times and it may not work at all. If you do get it to boot up go ahead and try unlocking it. I found it pretty easy. Definitely easier than going to an att store and paying $20 for a new sim and extra $10 for a downgraded data plan (3g to Edge ). I would really like to clone my sim and be able to use both phones without swapping but that my not be in the cards.

Our contract with the accursed T-mobile is ending, so we're looking at switching to Verizon (much better coverage in northeast PA).
I've been itching for a BB for awhile now. Verizon is pushing the Tour 9630 and the Curve 8330. The Tour looks pretty nice, but you nigs are all schooled in this stuff. What's the best current BB offering?
